Aug. 2018 Welcome to HMS, Where Cubs become Grizzlies

    Dear Hoquiam Middle School Families,

We hope you’ve enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing summer! The weeks since school was dismissed for summer break have flown by, and have been filled with preparations for the coming school year. As we start the new school year, I’d first like to heartily welcome our new students and families, as well as welcome back those who are returning to Hoquiam Middle School. This is my 2nd year as the principal and I am extremely proud to have the opportunity to partner and learn with you about what it means to be a Classy Cub!   If you’d like to meet with me, just stop by or call to set a date and time.

For those that are new to HMS and have not met me I want to share my goals and values as a middle school administrator and educator.  My priorities are to Relate with Compassion, Educate with Rigor and Empower for Success while ensuring that all children are healthy, happy and safe, so they may learn as much as they can.  I have developed these goals and values over my many years as a classroom teacher and administrator.  I began my teaching career working with adult learners and high school students in Federal Way, WA.  I later became a special education and ELA teacher at the middle school level where I spent 8 years.  I then had the opportunity to serve as the Dean of Students at a middle school in Tacoma.  Most recently I have had the honor to be the assistant principal at Hoquiam High School and principal for HOMELINK to support hundreds of diverse learners each day in both traditional and non-traditional academic settings.  Some of my greatest accomplishments do not come from my profession but rather in my personal life.  My wife, Katie, and I are proud parents of two beautiful children and future Cubs/Grizzlies: Ashley (7) 2nd grader at Lincoln and Ethan (5) is in preschool.  When you ask others about me, they often remark about my work with students in such a caring and calm manner. Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all your children have the best possible experiences while at Hoquiam Middle School.

This summer has seen a lot of staff learning new and greater things in preparation for this school year.  We have some exciting changes in store.  This year we are fortunate to have the support of the District, local churches, and other community businesses and partner to provide every middle school student their initial school supplies binder.  We are excited to introduce AVID at HMS and as part of our schoolwide sytem of support students will be taught valuable organizational and planning skills that will allow them to be successful in high school and in life beyond high school.  We asked the partners to help us so that ALL students get the benefit of the necessary tools.  The Binder and Student planner are required components for each student every day in every class.  Students that loose or damage either one will be provided replacements at the lowest cost possible (binder $10 & Planner $5).  AVID schoolwide seeks to provide students with high quality instruction, support in study and organizational skills, training in focused note taking and critical reading and writing skills.

Be sure that you take a few minutes to review with your child the 2018-19 Student Handbook. This handbook provides you with detailed information about our school’s policies, procedures and behavior expectations. Please pay focused attention to the common expectations for a variety of our school settings that are detailed towards the end of the student handbook. After you have reviewed the Handbook please sign and return the back page to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Two important reminders 1) no visitors, including parents/guardians, may go beyond the main office area without first signing in at the main office desk which is located just to the left when entering the middle school, and; 2) the school day starts at 8:05 AM with breakfast service starting at 7:35 AM students should not arrive to school prior to 7:35 AM.  Students will remain in the cafeteria and blacktop out back until 8:00am.

Finally, I would also invite you to continue participating in your child’s education alongside us. The middle school student is truly in the middle, and your child will grow by leaps and bounds during their stay with us; academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. Your support in their lives is even more critical during this stage of their development.

    GoCubs!!!
